Choose the Right Location:

Lavender thrives only in full sun and well‑drained soil.

  • Select a full‑sun spot (minimum 6–8 hours of direct light)
  • Avoid low areas where water collects
  • Ideal soil: sandy or loamy with excellent drainage

Prepare the Soil:

Recommended

Proper soil preparation prevents root rot and encourages strong growth.

  • Loosen soil 12–18 inches deep
  • Mix in coarse sand or small gravel to improve drainage
  • If soil is acidic, add a small amount of lime to raise pH (lavender prefers pH 6.5–7.5)

Plant Your Lavender:

Correct spacing and planting depth help the plant form its signature mound.

  • Dig a hole the same depth as the root ball
  • Space plants 12–18 inches apart for borders or hedges
  • Place the plant so the crown sits just above soil level
  • Backfill lightly and avoid compacting the soil

Water Deeply After Planting:

***Important***

Lavender needs moisture to establish but dislikes consistently wet soil.

  • Water thoroughly right after planting
  • For the first 2–3 weeks, water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry
  • Once established, water sparingly—lavender is drought tolerant

Maintain and Shape

Light pruning keeps Hidcote compact and encourages dense flowering.

  • In early spring, trim back 1/3 of the plant, avoiding cutting into woody stems
  • Remove spent blooms to encourage reblooming
  • Avoid heavy fertilizing—lavender prefers lean soil
